Boxing legend Hector “Macho” Camacho has been shot several times while in a vehicle in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He is in critical condition.
Circumstances surrounding the shooting are sketchy at this time, but from what we know, he and a friend were seated in a Ford Mustang around 7PM when another vehicle, a van, drove up and fired several rounds in their direction. The gunshots killed the driver of the car and struck Camacho, 50, in the neck and head multiple times. No word on Camacho’s outlook, although we hear it’s grim. We will keep you updated.
No arrests have been made in connection with the shooting.
Hector “Macho” Camacho hails from Bayamon, Puerto Rico. His son, Hector Camacho Jr. is also a professional boxer. Hector Sr. also has a teenaged son who he is accused of abusing. Hector allegedly picked the teenager up by the neck and slammed him into a wall in 2011. Hector was charged with child abuse. His trial, set to begin on September 4, 2012, was delayed until October 30, but I have a feeling that was delayed as well because I’ve not been able to find anymore on it. Not sure if that event was related to the shooting or not, but it’s worth noting.
We originally heard the van involved with the shooting was located by police and a high speed chase ensued which resulted in one suspect being detained while others later fled on foot, but there is no confirmation of this yet.
11/21 UPDATE:
A hospital rep has released the following statement regarding Hector Camacho’s prognosis:
“He went into cardiac arrest. The doctors were able to get his heart started again with the medicine and we are maintaining his blood pressure and pulse stable medically right now to see whether during this morning, afternoon or evening we see a positive change.”
We’ve also heard that no bullets struck his brain, which is good. Some reports have suggested Camacho IS expected to live, while TMZ has reported that his outlook is “very, very, very grim.”
11/23 UPDATE:
Hector Camacho has been declared brain dead and is on life support. Despite reports that he has been taken off life support, his son, Hector Camacho Jr., says that is not true. ”My father is a boxer and we’re going to let him fight for his life,” he said. “The doctors have said a lot of things, but he is alive, he’s in the fight.”
11/25 UPDATE:
Hector Macho Camacho has died. He went into cardiac arrest Saturday and his family removed him from life support.
