Is a Twitter music service going to be launched this month? It just might!
It’s been reported that the social networking company is planning on releasing a new music app. Last year, Twitter bought music sharing service We Are Hunted and apparently has been using its technology as a model to develop their own app. According to CNET (via NME), Twitter Music could be released on iOS at the end of this month.
The app “suggests artists and songs personalized to suit which accounts a user follows on Twitter. Those tracks will then be streamed to the user via SoundCloud.”
It will also supposedly have “four main tabs to help the user search for music. Along with the ‘Suggested’ tab, which picks artists from who the user follows, the app will have ‘Popular’ and ‘Emerging’ tabs as well as utilizing a hashtag (#nowplaying) to see what tracks other users are listening to.”
Another cool thing about the app is that people who don’t currently have a Twitter account will still be able to use it.
The music service will be competing with the likes of streaming sites such as Spotify and Pandora and even Facebook with its evolving News Feed music section.
Currently Twitter has a @Twittermusic account set up. On the homepage a caption reads: “Music related tweets from around the world. – Twitter HQ”. The account already has close to 2.5 million followers, so it’s already doing well.
Neither Twitter nor We Are Hunted has given any comments regarding the launch.
What a great idea and why didn’t they think of this earlier? This is not only great for Twitter and its users, but also another way for newer bands to get their name out there.
