I Love the 80s – Boy George

[Click to listen]

From the day I saw Boy George shimmy onstage on Solid Gold, back in like, 1982, I was hooked.

Growing up in a super small town I had never seen anything or anyone like George in the first 10 years of my life. I couldn’t stop looking at him, studying his clothes, his hair, and of course, the flawless, dramatic makeup. Of course I ran right out and bought Culture Club’s “Kissing to be Clever”, which played over and over on my cassette boom box.

I was inspired to post this today because Boy George actually responded to a tweet of mine and to be honest, I was tickled pink.

I asked him:

@theboygeorge are you and Rosie on talking terms these days?

And he answered:

@spicypants She whispered in my ear ‘friends for life’ ain’t heard from her since!

So Rosie, honey, get on the horn, doll!

Boy George’s Birthday Week

Thursday, June 18th, 2009

Boy George enjoying a walk in the Hampstead Heath.

While out on his walk, Stephen Fry stopped by his home and left a bouquet of flowers and some books as a belated birthday gift.

‘The Boy’ just turned 48 Sunday (June 14th).

Glad to see George is looking so fab these days. He really seems to have straightened out, and I am thrilled for him. He wears sobriety well. And damn, he has lost quite a bit of weight in the last 6 months!

Jail Did Boy George Good

Tuesday, May 12th, 2009

boy-george-after-jail

Boy George is out of jail after four months and is looking a billion times better than when he went in.

I almost didn’t even recognize him here. He doesn’t even look like the same person. Maybe he will finally clean up his act and take care of himself.

Boy George Gets Jail Time

Friday, January 16th, 2009

27492PCN_BoyGeorge

Boy George was convicted of false imprisonment and was sentenced to 15 months in jail on Friday.

George, real name George O’Dowd, was found guilty last month of holding a male escort against his will by handcuffing him to a wall in his apartment. He held the man for under an hour.

O’Dowd’s attorney blames both men for the incident and says they acted like “drug-crazed idiots.”

AP: The singer denied the charge, saying he had restrained Carlsen with handcuffs while trying to figure out if a computer had been tampered with. Carlsen, 29, said O’Dowd swung at him with a metal chain as he ran from the apartment after a naked photo shoot.

Photos of Carlsen’s injuries — which he said had been inflicted by O’Dowd — were shown to the jury, but the singer denied he was responsible.

Speaking to Judge Radford on Friday, O’Dowd’s lawyer, Adrian Waterman, said: “This defendant is a kind and generous man who is particularly mindful of others’ needs. He is the antithesis of the haughty bullying star. He was not himself when addled by the habitual and relatively long-lasting using of illegal drugs.”

George was not himself because he was under the influence of drugs? Then tell me, when is he himself? This guy’s a full on junkie! He and George Michael should shack up.

Celebrity Quote of the Day – Boy George

Monday, August 4th, 2008

boygeorge

“I’ve been strung out on drugs for the past five years. But this time I’m clean for good – I don’t want to die. I’ve spent five years in this chemical cloud. Getting clean at the end of 2007 was a very big thing. I was using half my brain, half my personality. Now I know it won’t happen again. I was like an old man, I could barely walk because I was using so much, now I’m completely clean.”

- Boy George says this time he’s cleaned up for good.

Celebrity Quote of the Day – Boy George

Wednesday, July 2nd, 2008

“You can’t stop someone taking drugs, I know that, but you can certainly stop them performing. Somebody needs to stop her going onstage. I’ve been in that place. I know exactly what it’s like and I know how bad it is for her. I mean there’s nothing of her she’s emaciated. It just breaks my heart to see it. Who is around to drag her off the stage?”

- Boy George says that Amy Winehouse needs to stop performing and take care of herself.

Boy George Banned From Entering USA

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

Boy George has been refused a visa allowing him to enter the country.

George has scheduled performance dates in the United States for his current tour. He was also set to perform especially for his former colleagues at New York’s Department of Sanitation.

George’s spokesperson says his client is devastated. It would have been the singer’s first performances in the States in a decade.

His attorneys are attempting to get George’s visa approved.

His manager said in a statement, “George is astounded at the decision and is having lawyers here in the States look at it in the hope that someone will change their mind. George has not been convicted of anything in London and there is a presumption in the Western World of innocence until proven guilty. He is clearly not considered any form of risk.  George really would love to come to America and repay his American fans  loyalty and that is why we are asking the U.S. authorities to reconsider their decision.”

I Love the 80s

Wednesday, March 19th, 2008

Great interview with Boy George on Late Night with David Letterman back in 1984.

George was only 23-years old but flamboyant as ever. Remember, back in ‘84 it was a different time. Nowadays it would be no big deal to see a star dressed like that but back then, George was a big deal. Even if you didn’t like him, you still couldn’t help but watch him.

This video is great, classic Dave as well.
