Christina Applegate Opts for Double Mastectomy
Christina Applegate, 36, was diagnosed with breast cancer earlier this month, and after surgery, she is completely cancer free.
“I’m clear. Absolutely 100-percent clear and clean,” she said in her Good Morning America appearance on Tuesday.
Applegate, whose own mother has battled the disease twice, has the gene (BRCA1) which is known to cause breast cancer. So instead of going through chemo, radiation and worrying about a possible recurrence - she opted for a double mastectomy. The surgery was three weeks ago and was a success.
Applegate said, “Sometimes I cry. Sometimes I scream, and I get really angry and I get really into wallowing in self-pity sometimes, and I think it’s all part of healing.”
“My decision, after looking at all the treatment plans that were possibilities for me, the only one that seemed the most logical and the one that was going to work for me was to have a bilateral mastectomy. So basically I had a prophylactic double mastectomies.”
“I didn’t want to go back to the doctors every four months for testing and squishing and everything. I just wanted to kind of be rid of this whole thing for me. This was the choice that I made, and it was a tough one.”
Applegate says that when she found out about her cancer she was immediately angry. But soon after the anger turned to dedication - dedication to beat the awful disease.
Christina will undergo reconstructive surgery, which will take place over the next eight months. She seems to have a good attitude about it and joked, “I’m gonna have cute boobs till I’m 90.”
An inspiration to all of us. I can’t say I would be so optimistic..
