The night before Heath Ledger died he asked a friend to call him the next morning so they could meet up.

Shekhar Kapur, director of the movie The Four Feathers which starred Ledger, said he had flown in the night before the tragedy and had wanted to get together. Ledger said he couldn’t meet that night but to call and wake him in the morning and they would do something.

“I last spoke to him the night before he died,” said Kapur. “I had just arrived in New York [from London]. He said he could not see me that night but really wanted to meet me the next day. He made me promise that I would call him in the morning and wake him up. I tried. Little did I know that his soul had already left his body.”

New reports are coming in that a rolled up $20 bill with a white narcotic powder on it were found in the apartment where Heath Ledger died.

According to a police report, several small baggies of an unknown substance were also found in the residence. It is in the process of being lab tested. It is unknown at this point if Ledger had ingested the substance.

Today’s autopsy on Ledger turned up inconclusive but more testing is to follow. Results can take 10 days to two weeks.

Anti-anxiety drugs Valium and Zoloft, as well as sleeping medication Ambien were all found near the actor at the time of death.

Ledger’s publicist, Mara Buxbaum has released the following statement,

“We are all deeply saddened and shocked by this accident. This is an extremely difficult time for his loved ones and we are asking the media to please respect the family’s privacy and avoid speculation until the facts are known.”

UPDATE:

• Police say the rolled up $20 bill that was found has tested negative for narcotics. It’s still not known what substance was in the small packets that were found.

Best Week Ever is reporting that a Best Buy store in San Diego created a Heath Ledger tribute promoting his DVDs only hours after his death.

Customer Don T. took this photo after stumbling across the tribute that some might find distasteful, others opportunistic.

The sign, in bold caps, reminded customers to “Remember a Great Actor Through Great Performances”, by purchasing one or more of his DVDs that had been carefully arranged on the table.

Was it too soon to construct the tribute table in Ledger’s honor? Was it an act of greed or a sincere gesture towards the tragic death of a loved actor? Put it this way, would you have been disappointed to have learned about his death at Best Buy? Or better yet, would you have purchased a DVD after learning of his passing?

Heath Ledger’s father Kim has released a statement on behalf of the family regarding his son’s tragic death.

Heath’s family confirms the very tragic, untimely and accidental passing of our dearly loved son, brother and doting father of Matilda. He was found peacefully asleep in his New York apartment by his housekeeper at 3:30 p.m. U.S. time.We would like to thank our friends and everyone around the world for their well wishes and kind thoughts at this time. Heath has touched so many people on so many different levels during his short life but few had the pleasure of truly knowing him.

He was a down to earth, generous, kind-hearted, life-loving and selfless individual who was extremely inspirational to many. Please now respect our families need to grieve and come to terms with our loss privately.

Police are saying it may have been drug related.

Ledger had an appointment for a massage at his residence (which he sublets from Mary-Kate Olsen) at 3:30pm EST. When the masseuse arrived (3:26pm) the housekeeper went to alert him. That’s when she found him dead.

The housekeeper and the masseuse tried shaking him awake but after he didn’t respond they called 911. Ledger was pronounced dead at 3:45pm EST this afternoon.

He died in his bed at the age of 28.

UPDATES

• TMZ is reporting that sleeping pills were found on and around the bed of Ledger’s. They add that he had a substance abuse problem but a friend claims he had been clean for a year.

• NYPD spokesman Paul Browne stated, “We are investigating the possibility of an overdose.” Ledger was allegedly found naked in bed with sleeping pills found near him. Paparazzi swarmed the building when news broke but officers guarded the door, since Ledger’s body was still inside. An autopsy is scheduled for tomorrow [Jan.23].

• US Weekly is reporting that friends of Heath’s say they “saw this coming,” and say that he had been in a depression for sometime as he struggle to maintain sobriety. They add that Ledger’s daughter with ex Michelle Williams was the only light in his life.

• TMZ has video of Heath’s body being removed from the building and to the medical examiners office by ambulance.

• Heath had pneumonia before he died.

• His family insists that he did not kill himself - they say that police told them it was accidental. The family is reportedly distraught over allegations he committed suicide.

• Michele Williams is said to be devastated and is headed to NY at this moment.
