A Spicy Review- ‘Johnny Cash at San Quentin’ Legacy Edition

Tuesday, December 19th, 2006

‘Johnny Cash at San Quentin’

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

This three disc set (two CD’s, one DVD and a 38 page booklet!) is absolutely amazing. I am a huge Johnny Cash fan, so I was thrilled when I found out I was going to review it.

‘Johnny Cash at San Quentin’ is a follow-up to ‘Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison’.

Johnny and his clan (including June Carter, Carl Perkins & The Statler Brothers) performed in maximum security prisons known for being some of the roughest in the country.

These are the recordings from San Quentin. Thirty one songs on two discs plus a one hour long DVD documentary including footage from the 1969 concert, interviews with the prisoners as well as the guards who were in the audience during the recording.

My favorite Johnny Cash songs during this performance have got to be ‘A Boy Named Sue’, a humorous song about a boy whose father named him Sue so he would grow up to be tough..and ‘Folsom Prison Blues’, quite possibly my favorite Johnny Cash song of all time.

The included 38 page booklet offers some interesting photos and bits of information about Johnny and the San Quentin performance. For example, the infamous picture of Johnny Cash flipping the bird with a scowl on his face was taken during a rehearsal at San Quentin, after Johnny had repeatedly asked a cameraman to move as he was was getting between Mr. Cash and his audience.

The ‘Johnny Cash at San Quentin’ Legacy Edition, is a neccessity for any music lover. Originally a 10 song LP, now a three disc deluxe package. This package is a sure collector’s item for Johnny Cash fans everywere.

You wil not be disappointed with this set and if you aren’t a Johnny Cash fan now, you will be after listening to this gem.

Spicy gives it a Thumbs Up!
