Spicy Movie Review - ‘Nacho Libre’

Monday, October 23rd, 2006

I have told you all about the time I hung out with Jack Black and what a great guy he really is in person.

His personality shows through in his movies, and that’s why I have always liked his flicks. So I went into ‘Nacho Libre’ with high expectations and once again, I was not let down.

Jack’s character is Ignacio, a monastery cook, who grew up there as an orphan. He isn’t very good at his job, but loves the children he is feeding.

Ignacio has a fantasy about becoming a professional (masked) wrestler but must keep it a secret from his brothers at the monastery. Still, he is constantly dreaming, thinking and planning to fulfill this dream.

Ignacio gets a great idea after a run in with a homeless, hungry, tall, lanky guy named Esqueleto. Esqueleto is a scrapper, even for his stature. Ignacio thinks this could be just the tag team partner he needs. He convinces Esqueleto to join him. They become ‘Nacho Libre’ & ‘Esqueleto’ (The Skeleton).

Ignacio manages to hide his new found occupation a secret from the monastery, but his success is growing and the pressure is building.

This is another one of those feel good films that everyone will love.
I’d recommend this as one you pick up for your personal collection.

With Jack Black in it you know it will be good.

Movie Review - ‘Adrenaline Crew 2: Awaiting Trial’

Sunday, October 22nd, 2006

If you are male, in your late teens to mid-twenties, are crazy, love street bikes, easy women and tattoos, this is the movie for you.

I will say that I found this movie to be entertaining, (for lack of a better word), but it isn’t anything new. Another group of young guys with too much testosterone, trying to out-perform eachother with terrifyingly dangerous stunts on public streets.
I think this has been done a few times already by The Wheelie Boys, Las Vegas Extremes, etc.

The Adrenaline Crew is very much the same, doing crazy shit, racking up fines, tickets and court dates just so they can put out a DVD that will horrify their mothers.

You are treated to a terrible accident where one guy wrecks on the freeway and you clearly see him land on his head. Then you get to see him nearly be run over by passing cars. And guess what? You never find out if he survived the whole ordeal either.

I think there are five words to sum this movie up. ‘Young, dumb & full of cum.’

Movie Review: ‘So Much So Fast’

Wednesday, October 11th, 2006

‘So Much So Fast’ opens in NYC today thru October 17th at the Village East Theatre, and in Boston at the West Newton Cinema from Oct. 27th- Nov. 2nd.

If you get the chance to see this movie, take it.

‘So Much So Fast’ is a documentary filmed over the course of 5 years about a family’s love, a brother’s determination and one young man’s will to live.

Stephen Heywood finds out he has ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. He is 29 years old and is given less than 5 years to live.
His younger brother Jamie refuses to believe that this deadly disease cannot be cured or slowed. He quits his job to start a foundation to try and find a cure, or a drug that can prolong the life of an ALS patient.
Eventually Jamie convinces mainstream drug companies to work with him and with the ALS drugs on the market.

Some scientists are threatened by Jamie, a non-scientist, and his research. Some think he is in over his head, or that he does not have the credentials to accomplish such a feat. But that doesn’t stop Jamie. After a few years of being buried shoulder deep with his brother’s troubles and the foundation, his wife leaves him. Still, Jamie will not be deterred. He shows the love for his brother and a bond that some people never have and those of us that do will appreciate this film.

Over the next five years you see Stephen’s body deteriorate, but not his will to live. Stephen goes from being a vivacious young man who just made the decision to marry and have a child despite his future challenges to a weakend, slurring man unable to function without his $26,000 wheelchair.
Eventually Stephen has no controls over his body or his speech.
He must use a voice synthesizer to
speak, his head to control his chair.
Stephen says at one point that even if he becomes fully paralyzed h
e wants to live. There is so much to see.

On the 5 year anniversary of his diagnosis he makes the decision to be put on a respirator. If he did not do so, eventually he would lose the function of his lungs and he would die.

When asked what Stephen would do years prior had he known he would get the disease he replies, “Have more sex on film”.

Stephen should be inspiring to us all. His amazing bravery and love should be seen by all.

I love independant/Sundance/indie films and am so glad that I got to review this movie. I had tears in my eyes through many parts of it. You can’t help but love this family and this story.

Spicy gives ‘So Much So Fast’ a definite Thumbs Up.

Movie Review: Windy City Heat

Monday, October 9th, 2006

This is one hysterical movie.

What I love about ‘Windy City Heat’ is that it is different than most any other movie ever made. This movie is truly comedic genius.
If you like to laugh and are one for practical jokes, you won’t want to miss this.
‘Windy City Heat’ is a true story, more of a documentary, say. A real life practical joke played on a real guy. And it’s real funny.
Have you ever watched ‘The Truman Show’ with Jim Carey? For those who have not, it is about a man who was born into a ‘reality show’ and everyone was in on the joke except for him. His life as he knew it was all fabricated. Windy City Heat is along that same line..except this is reality.

Perry Karavello has been in Hollywood for twenty years, and never landed that big role. Until now. His friends along with hundreds of others have arranged a huge practical joke on Perry. Perry thinks he has landed the lead role in an action flick called, of course, ‘Windy City Heat’. Perry will play the lead, Stone Fury. His two friends of many years, Tony Barbieri (who plays ‘Mole’) and Don Barris (who plays Big Lou) will have supporting roles.
Now, Perry is not the sharpest crayon in the box. He’s a strange, trollish guy and kind of creepy in fact. He screams and throws tantrums when he has had it with his friends fucking with him. Which they do. Often. He loves his hat and black leather jacket. He has hair of Gallagher. This guy is an easy target.
Watch as Perry films fake scenes, attends fake awards shows, and on the Special Features portion of the DVD, as he watches ‘Windy City Heat’ for the first time.

Bobcat Goldthwait, Jimmy Kimmel, Adam Corolla, Dane Cook, Carson Daly and Lisa Kushell all make cameos.

Spicy gives it a thumbs up. This one is worth seeing.

A Spicy Movie Review - ‘Loverboy’ Starring Kyra Sedgewick

Tuesday, September 19th, 2006

Loverboy‘ was released on DVD today, September 19th.

A truly remarkable cast including Kyra Sedgewick, Matt Dillon, Marisa Tomei, Campbell Scott (’Singles’), and Kevin Bacon.

Loverboy‘ is about Emily, (Kyra Sedgewick) a woman who is lost within herself and wants to have a child in the worst way. She resorts to sleeping around with every Tom, Dick and Harry to try and conceive her love child. In her mind everything would be complete and she would be loved unconditionally, if she had a child.
Emily eventually succeeds in getting pregnant, the father being ‘Paul’ (Campbell Scott) and Emily names her child after his father.
Little Paul grows up in a very sheltered life, one completely controlled by his mother.
He has no friends. He does not attend public school or go to social functions. When Paul would question why, she would tell him that he would have more fun being together with her. She kept him in her tight grasp and did not allow him room to grow.
Emily gives her child a nickname, one I found to be quite disturbing. ‘Loverboy‘. Little Paul hated being called that and every time Emily says it, he reminds her that, “My name is Paul.”
It’s almost as though Emily almost felt of her son as the man in her life. One she could control. One she could make sure wouldn’t leave her.
Emily seemed to have a separation anxiety and lack of self esteem possibly brought on by her parents (played by Kevin Bacon and Marisa Tomei) who are really into themselves, sexually and selfishly. Their priorities seem to lie within themselves, not their daughter.
It’s these insecurities and fears that get Emily in the end. Consuming her and her sanity resulting in a haunting display of obsessive love.
In my opinion this movie is slow and depressing. About halfway through I wanted it to end.
Basically you spend most of the movie feeling sorry for Paul and wondering how a mother could treat her child like that. There is no excitement, no mystery no heartbeat . This is one of those movies that maybe you watch when you are alone, depressed and it’s raining like hell outside. But certainly I wouldn’t go out of my way to recommend it to anyone.
Spicy gives it a thumbs down.

Even though I love Kyra Sedgewick and Campbell Scott being together again, (’Singles‘) I hope their next movie is better than this.

A Spicy Movie Review- ‘Queer Duck: The Movie’

Wednesday, September 13th, 2006

With a cast like Bi Polar Bear, Oscar Wildcat, Openly Gator and Queer Duck, you can tell what sort of humor you are going to be in for.

‘Queer Duck the Movie’ is a (duh!) gay cartoon with animals as the characters. Main character Queer Duck is a male nurse while his significant other, Openly Gator is a waiter. All is super groovy with the couple until Queer Duck meets Lola Buzzard. Lola is an old bird who used to be a Broadway diva in her day. She takes an instant liking to him and begs him to marry her. Queer Duck is then faced with the situation of questioning his sexual orientation.
Queer Duck goes to a company called ‘Homo No Mo’ to try and turn him straight. They subject him to a clockwork orange type shock therapy treatment that failed. In fact, Queer Duck almost enjoyed it.
Then Lola sends him to Reverend Vandergelding to see if he can turn him into a regular old straight, beer drinking, farting dude. The Reverend whips up a special concoction in the blender that is sure to work with ingredients like these;

“A can of Bud,
Stallions blood,
Cologne from an Italian stud.
Fibers from Hugh Hefner’s robe,
A photo of a homophobe.
Burt Reynolds old toupee,
and soon this duck will not be gay!”

The blended drink ‘cures’ Queer Duck of his homosexuality and he marries Lola Buzzard. He startes dressing in Harley Davidson shirts, drinking whisky and talking differently.
But will Queer Duck stay straight and married to Lola or will he come to terms with the fact that he is really gay and get back with his true love Openly Gator? I’ll leave the ending for you to find out.

But let me tell you this, the end is SO GAY!

Special guest stars include Conan O’Brien, Tim Curry, Bruce Vilanch, and David Duchovny as “Tiny Jesus”. And there are many celebrity cameos (voices by impersonators) as well.

You’ll enjoy this fun, quirky and humorous cartoon, I did.

Mr. Spicy Reviews ‘Apocalypse Now: The Complete Dossier’ (Dual Feature)

Wednesday, August 16th, 2006

“A masterpiece, classic, even rightly dubbed as vintage American cult-culture.” -Mr. Spicy

Francis Coppola’s Apocalypse Now will forever stand on the shrine of all that is bizarre, very cool, and incredibly creative to the mind’s-end imagination. You don’t have to be a guy’s-guy to like or appreciate the original 1979 big-screen release of Apocalypse Now, but you do have to have a deeper appreciation of the original film to absorb the enormity of the 2001 re-release.

Many edited and previously deleted scenes were added in context to Captain Benjamin Willard’s (Martin Sheen) journey up river to confront a highly decorated American officer, Colonel Kurtz (Marlon Brando) who defected from command in Viet Nam. Kurtz - rightly or wrongly - accused of murdering supposed double-agents of the Viet Kong, makes his escape and new lair in the bowels of the Cambodian jungle. His new following is massive, loyal…and even more afraid.

Captain Willard’s assignment is to go all the way up river and assassinate Kurtz. True to the original film, the music, score, and audio effects are outstanding. The 2001 re-release defines a number of side encounters and journeys not seen in the ‘79 version. I particularly found the additional scenes integrated into the film to be long and more drawn out than needed. What was particularly interesting was some of the additional scenes, commentaries, and most-common technical FAQs at the conclusion of the 2001 movie.

So many great scenes, classic one-liners like, “ah, the smell of napalm in the morning… smells like victory”, purple haze, a memorable LSD trip, and a powerful reminder of how cool Jim Morrison and the Doors were, with a full-length version of “The End” so timely woven.

All said and done, despite the length of the 2001 version, I definitely enjoyed watching Apocalypse Now again.
