Shirley Manson Opens Up to Steppin’ Out Magazine

Tuesday, October 7th, 2008

Chaunce Hayden from Steppin’ Out mag caught up with ‘Garbage’ front woman Shirley Manson and for a moment we get to see the world through this red hot vixen’s eyes.

From Madonna in lingerie to being considered a sex symbol, Manson shows us why she has such a cult following with her no nonsense, tough and fearless responses.

ON BEING A SEX SYMBOL:

I think any woman who doesn’t have twelve eyes and pulsating boils all over her body is considered a sex symbol in this day and age. It’s such an overused term. It’s become completely redundant. So I just don’t take it very seriously. I have no interest in being a sex symbol or not being one. It’s something I consider quite silly.

ON MADONNA:

If Madonna wants to wear lingerie on stage at this point in her life, then so be it. More power to her. But I would rather see and hear other things from Madonna on top of that. I’d like to see other facets of her. As you mature and get older, and your life experience forms your outlook on the world, then so too does it form the work that you chose to involve yourself in. I don’t want to keep repeating the same things I’ve always done in my life. I want to keep challenging myself and making myself feel excited.

ON BONO:

I have a crush on Bono. I was lovesick every day while we toured with him. I was lovesick every day. I would go to the stadium and just have a nervous feeling in my stomach because I find him so enchanting. He’s a real lightening rod. He’s a pretty spectacular individual who has attracted a lot of criticism during his career. But he’s done some phenomenal things for people who really needed his support. I admire him immensely.

ON HAVING RED HAIR:

We used to get burned as witches at the stake. Also it takes a third more anesthesia to put us gingers down before an operation. That’s true! It takes more strength because the red heads will rebel and fight. They need to subdue us and don’t get on our bad side.

ON ACTING FOR THE FIRST TIME (TERMINATOR: THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES):

When Josh Friedman, the show’s writer, explained to me what role he wanted me to play I just feel in love with the idea. It really captured my imagination. I just jumped without thinking about it too much. But now I suddenly realize what I got myself into! (Laughs) It’s crazy because I don’t have any acting background! I don’t know why I was asked to be on the show. I was very surprised they asked me. Wouldn’t you be?
Believe me I’ve asked “Why me?” many times and he just throws his head back and laughs. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not looking a gift horse in the mouth. It’s a big challenge for me at this point in my life. It’s exciting and scary. But if you don’t move toward things that scare you, you don’t really grow. You know?
